When you own a car, you’re supposed to perform routine maintenance on a variety of parts every so many thousands of miles, but if you’re not the type of person to know, or even want to know, everything you can about cars you might be wondering: what exactly should you be doing and when? Luckily, Suburban Auto Finance has your back yet again with a basic routine maintenance schedule below!
Check Monthly
Some car parts wear down faster than others, or often go unnoticed, and as a result should be checked on monthly to avoid unexpected problems, these include:
- Check engine light;
- Interior and exterior lights;
- Tire inflation/tread/overall condition;
- Windshield washer fluid.
Check Every 3,000 Miles (Approx. Every 3 Months)
Three months may not seem like a long time to you, but for a car it is. That’s why, there are quite a few parts that require inspection at least every 3,000 miles or so in addition to those checked monthly, including:
- Transmission fluid;
- Battery/Cables;
- All your belts;
- Engine oil/filter;
- Exhaust;
- Fuel Filter;
- All your hoses;
- Power steering fluid.
Check Every 6,000 Miles (Approx. Every 6 Months)
Some parts can go much longer without inspection, but should still be given a good once over at least twice a year, or every 6,000 miles. So, perhaps at the start of each season, make sure in addition to all your monthly, and quarterly, maintenance you also check on your vehicle’s:
- Chassis lubrication;
- Polish;
- Wiper blades;
- Engine air filter.
Check Every 12,000 Miles (Approx. Once A Year)
Some car parts are designed to last a long time – you might even assume they’ll last for years without any problems. However, due to how hard your vehicle works for you daily, you should make sure in addition to your routine monthly inspections you’re also keeping an eye out at least once a year for your:
- Brakes;
- Cabin air filter;
- Coolant (Antifreeze) levels;
- Steering/Suspension.
After all, taking great care of your car is the best way to make sure it’s apart of your life for as long as possible, and that’s it’s an asset rather than an unmanageable expense. So please, do yourself a favor and set aside at least one day per month, every month, to dedicate a little of your time to routine car maintenance. It really won’t take as long as you think, and we guarantee it will pay off long-term in savings on repairs, new parts, and more.
